Guarding Our Hearts

The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” We are told “with all diligence”! That means we are to be extremely careful to guard what goes into our hearts. Things enter through our eyes and our ears. Jesus said to be careful what you hear and see (Luke 8:18; 10:23). In Matthew 12:34–35, Jesus said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth good things.” Whatever we put into our heart will come out our mouths. And if we are to expect good things, then we must put in good things. The movies we watch and the people we associate with all will impact our spiritual growth (1 Cor. 15:33; 1 Thess. 5:22; 3 John 11). We can deceive our hearts by not watching our tongue (James 1:26). We can err in our heart because we have not known God’s ways (Heb. 3:10). We can have an evil heart because of unbelief (Heb. 3:12).

The best way to protect our heart is to place the Word in it. In Psalm 119:11, David states, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” We want to have a pure heart (1 Tim. 1:5; 2 Tim. 2:22; 1 Pet. 1:22). Let us not pollute it.
